5 Tips for Starting Your Pottery Journey in 2026 (From People Who Know Clay)

If you’ve been feeling the itch to get creative in 2026 - and you’re drawn to the slow, soothing rhythm of clay - you’re in excellent company.

Pottery has made its way onto many a “to-try” list, and for good reason: it’s grounding, joyful, and endlessly rewarding (even when your pot turns out a bit wobbly).

Whether you’ve booked a beginner class or you’re just curious where to start, we’ve put together our top five tips for starting your pottery journey this year…

1. Don’t wait until you feel “ready”

You don’t need to be an artist, a designer, or even remotely crafty to enjoy pottery. One of the most beautiful things about working with clay is how accessible it is - your hands, a bit of guidance, and a willingness to try something new are all you really need. The best way to learn is to get stuck in.

So if you're holding off because you're "not creative enough"... this is your sign to let that go. (Clay doesn’t care about perfection - we promise!)

2. Start small, stay curious

Your first pinch pot probably won’t make it onto the mantelpiece (though it might surprise you!), but that’s not the point. When you’re starting out, the magic is in the making. Try different techniques - from pinching and coiling to slab-building or throwing - and see what sparks something in you.

Curiosity is the best teacher, especially when paired with a mug of tea and a supportive studio environment.

3. Make peace with imperfections

Pottery is humbling. One day you’re making a beautiful bowl, the next you’ve collapsed it entirely while adding a handle. That’s the joy of it! Learning to embrace imperfections (and happy accidents) is all part of the journey.

Every pot tells a story - and those little quirks are part of its charm.

4. Take your time

Clay teaches patience. There’s a rhythm to the process: shaping, drying, firing, glazing, firing again… nothing is instant, and that’s what makes it so satisfying. You can’t rush it - and in 2026, isn’t that kind of a gift in itself?

Enjoy the slow. Savour the process. It’s what pottery is all about.

5. Choose a class that feels welcoming

Starting anything new can feel daunting, so it helps to join a class that’s warm, inclusive, and designed for beginners. At Chisel Pottery, we believe creativity flourishes in kind, relaxed spaces - whether you're here to learn something new or just want a break from your day-to-day.
