A Potter’s Christmas Starts Early: Why October Is the Perfect Time to Get Making
We know. It’s October.
You’ve barely accepted that summer is over and here we are talking about Christmas. 🎄
But there’s one very good reason the festive season starts a little earlier inside a pottery studio…
Clay refuses to be rushed.
So while we’re not putting the Christmas tree up just yet, if you’re dreaming about handmade decorations, pottery gifts or a beautifully wonky festive creation of your own, now is exactly the right time to start making.
Why does pottery take so long?
One of the lovely things about pottery is that there’s a whole process happening behind the scenes after you leave the studio.
Once you’ve made your piece, it needs time to dry slowly and thoroughly before it can go anywhere near a kiln.
Then comes its first (bisque) firing.
After that, depending on what you’ve made, your piece can be decorated or glazed before heading back into the kiln for another firing.
Only then does it emerge as the finished piece you get to take home.
It’s a slow process - and we think that’s part of the magic.
What can you make for Christmas?
There’s something particularly special about bringing out decorations every December that you’ve made yourself.
This year at Chisel, we’re leaning fully into festive making, with opportunities to create pieces including Christmas tree luminaries, festive tealight holders and handmade Christmas decorations.
Or perhaps your Christmas project is something less obviously festive.
A handmade mug for someone you love. A serving dish that comes out every Christmas. A little trinket dish for Mum. Something beautifully imperfect that you know you couldn’t have picked up from a shop.
It doesn’t have to look professionally made.
In fact, we’d argue that’s rather the point.
Give the experience instead
Of course, you don’t have to make the present yourself.
If you’re trying to buy for someone who doesn’t need any more stuff, a pottery experience gives them something completely different: time to switch off, learn something new and make something of their own.
Our 2027 weekly classes are already available to book, which means you can get ahead with gifting and give them something to look forward to once Christmas is over.
Perfect for the person who has been saying “I’d love to try pottery” for approximately three years. 👀
And what about the work Christmas party?
If you’re responsible for this year’s team Christmas plans, pottery also makes a rather good alternative to the usual meal and drinks.
Our corporate pottery workshops are designed to get teams away from screens and doing something genuinely creative together.
There’s no pressure to already be good at it - which usually means plenty of conversation, laughter and some increasingly competitive pottery as the session goes on.
We can host groups at Chisel or discuss bringing the pottery experience to you.
Christmas at Chisel
Over the next couple of months, the studio will be getting progressively more festive, the kilns progressively busier and the shelves increasingly full of handmade Christmas creations.
So, if you’d like one of them to be yours, don’t leave it until December.
Christmas starts early when you’re making it from clay. 🎄
