Thinking About Trying the Pottery Wheel? Here’s What to Expect
If you’ve ever watched someone throw a pot on a wheel - whether in a studio or on television - you’ve probably thought:
“I’d love to try that.”
And you absolutely can.
At Chisel Pottery, our Pottery Throwing Taster sessions are designed specifically for beginners - giving you a chance to experience the wheel for yourself in a relaxed, supportive environment.
Here’s what you can expect…
It’s Not as Easy as It Looks (But That’s Part of the Fun)
Let’s be honest - wheel throwing takes a little practice.
Your first attempt might feel wobbly. The clay might not do exactly what you want it to do. And yes, things might collapse.
But that’s all part of the process.
Every potter starts here.
And the moment it does start to come together - when the clay centres and responds to your hands - it’s incredibly satisfying.
You’ll Be Guided Every Step of the Way
One of the biggest worries people have is: “What if I can’t do it?”
That’s exactly why our sessions are designed for beginners.
Kinga and the team guide you through:
How to centre the clay
How to pull up the walls
How to shape your piece
We keep groups small so everyone gets plenty of support and encouragement.
It’s Surprisingly Relaxing
Once you get into the rhythm of the wheel, something shifts.
The spinning motion, the focus of your hands, the feel of the clay - it becomes incredibly absorbing.
For many people, it’s the first time in a long while that they’ve truly switched off from everything else.
You Don’t Need Any Experience
You don’t need to be creative.
You don’t need to have tried pottery before.
You just need to be willing to give it a go.
Our throwing tasters are all about the experience - trying something new, having fun, and learning the basics of the wheel.
You’ll Leave Feeling Proud (Even If It’s Not Perfect)
At the end of the session, you’ll have created your own piece (or pieces), which we’ll take through the drying, firing, and glazing process for you.
A few weeks later, you’ll collect something you made with your own hands.
And that feeling? It never gets old.
